Mercurey, Vieilles Vignes

Mercurey, Vieilles Vignes

This cuvée takes its name from the two 60 year old parcels which lay in front of Philippe’s home in the village of Saint Martin-sous-Montaigu. It is composed of gravel over a red clay base and enjoys a south/southeast facing exposure. The vineyard was planted by Philippe’s grandfather during the 1940s from a massale selection.

The emerging trend in the Vieilles Vignes cuvée is toward precociousness, revealing its charms sooner than his 1er Cru cuvées. Beginning with a seductive nose of candied, sappy red fruits, it is difficult to resist. The palate extends into the darker fruits, a bit of earthiness and suggestions of those addictive cherry cough drops you might have enjoyed as a youngster, and perhaps still do. There is terrific balance, lovely density and a gorgeous silky texture with no perceptible tannin. Start to finish, a wine that is easy to love and difficult to put down.
